FEAPThe theme of this year's Aquaculture in Motion conference, the annual event of theFederation of European Aquaculture Producers (FEAP), was Farmed in Europe. Speakers reflected on the role of European aquaculture as a source of socio-economic security and healthy and relatively environmentally-benign protein, and on how, given the right circumstances, fish farming in Europe could become even more significant as a provider of jobs and nutrition.

In 1986, APROMAR was created as an association to defend the interests of the marine aquaculture sector. This year at the APROMAR General Assembly held on May 12, and opened by MAGRAMA Secretary General of Fisheries, D. Andrés Hermida, APROMAR celebrated 30 years of working for the aquaculture industry in Spain.

The president of APROMAR, José Carlos Rendon, highlighted some of the issues of importance for the sector. These included the National Strategic Aquaculture Plan, where he felt greater efforts were needed to implement the plan and to create awareness among local authorities about the need to streamline administrative procedures. Mr Rendon also said that the long delay in making funding from the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund available to the sector was another important issue. While acknowledging the importance of mussel production, he pointed out that production growth is possible in many other species too. Mr Rendon reminded the audience that APROMAR, backed by more than 60% of European producers of seabass and seabream, had filed a complaint with the European Commission against the government of Turkey for the subsidy that it pays to farmers for these species. If Turkey does not withdraw its subsidies, the European Commission should impose a duty on these products, he demanded. The final decision will be known in mid-September.


At the Seafood Expo Global, the world's largest seafood trade fair, the European Commission organized information sessions on various topics. One of the services to be promoted was EUMOFA, the European Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products, to which were devoted two sessions on 26 and 28 April. Using data drawn from EUMOFA, Xavier Guillou from the Markets and Trade Unit of the General Directorate for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries showed some of the main trends on the EU market for seafood.

The EU is the largest trader of fishery and aquaculture products in the world in terms of value. In 2015, the trade flow (including intra-EU) amounted to almost EUR50 billion on a volume 14 million tonnes. The EU covers its domestic consumption mostly through imports, the majority of which are either frozen or prepared products. Shrimps, tuna, white fish and fishmeal are the most imported products. Norway (mainly salmon and cod) and China (processing country for white fish) are the main EU suppliers.


One of Europe's most important seafood trade shows, fish international, took place in Bremen on 14-16 February 2016.  This biennial event, organized by Messe Bremen, attracted 11,700 visitors, and this year a record 270 exhibitors participated from 22 countries.

Every area of the seafood sector was represented at the show, from production and processing, retail distribution, transportation and packaging, to financial services and aquaculture technology. Germany is a significant European consumer as well as producer of seafood, and the show brought German buyers and producers together with leading European suppliers, importers and distributors.

EUMOFA introduced to global audience


A discussion of the European Market Observatory for Fisheries and Aquaculture Products (EUMOFA), an initiative of the European Commission, took place as a side event in Agadir, Morocco, on 22 February 2016, in conjunction with the FAO COFI Sub-Committee on Fish Trade. Its purpose was to introduce this important initiative to a wider audience around the globe and showcase the possibilities offered by the database, both to the policy-makers and industry.

Xavier Guillou, Market Analyst of DG Mare of the European Commission, said that he believes EUMOFA can be of great interest to a wide-ranging group of institutions and operators by providing more structured data. The rationale behind the tool is to provide aggregated and easily comparable data covering the whole value chain from first sale to consumption, covering a 15-year period.

He is confident that EUMOFA can facilitate trade flows in the EU market and make clear to policy-makers what factors are influencing policies.

Bremen: Trade fairs exceed expectations

About 11,700 visitors at fish international and GASTRO IVENT 

Exhibitors and organisers drew a positive balance in the Bremen exhibition halls at the end of the 15th fish international and the second GASTRO IVENT. With about 11,700 visitors the fair even surpassed the organisers' expectations. And the exhibition of Fleischer-Einkauf AG which took place parallel to the main event also achieved a good result with about 1,800 visitors.

Germany's only trade fair for fish and seafood once again proved its reputation as the industry's meeting place, and with numerous product innovations set the tone for the entire industry. "fish international stands out for its great audience", said Stefanie Görtz (Vidal Feinkost from Staudt): "It's not only the right place for maintaining existing contacts but also for attracting new ones." For Egil Magne Haugstad (Pelagia, Norway), a producer of raw materials for industry, the special charm of the fair is in its compact size: "Here you have time combined with short distances. That leads to interesting, in-depth discussions. In comparison, larger trade fairs have more the character of speed-dating."

Among the biggest exhibitors at fish international were Deutsche See and Transgourmet Seafood from Bremerhaven. "The fair was marked by good discussions, not only with our regular customers but also with new prospective ones," said company spokesman Andreas Kremer in an initial assessment. Jörgen Bergmann, Communications Manager at Transgourmet, came to a similar conclusion. Transgourmet had brought with them 20 partner companies. "It was a very good opportunity to present the full product and service portfolio", said Bergmann. "The fair isn't only important for us as a company but also for the location Bremerhaven."


The European Commission set up the European Marine Observation Data Network (EMODnet) six years ago. It is a network of more than 100 organisations working together to observe and measure the oceans, process the data according to international standards and then make that information freely available. Usually, the data are collected via local, national and regional databases and then made available via EMODnet's central information gateway as interoperable data layers and data products.

Human Activities is a relatively new discipline added to the EMODnet central portal. The aim is to map all sea-related human activities concerning for example mariculture, fisheries zones, main ports (i.e. transport of goods, passenger and vessels), cultural heritage, and many other. The map provides aggregated data on the geographical position and spatial extent of the activities concerned, their temporal variation, time when data was provided, and attributes to indicate the intensity of each activity. Data are collected and updated on a permanent basis, subject to their availability. The portal has been designed to make it easy to search for information.  

Representatives of the six project partners involved in Human Activities met in Oostende to discuss the project state-of-the-play as well as future tasks till the end of the project which will end in September 2016. Among these, the distribution of a questionnaire to key stakeholders to get their feedback as well as the implementation of a search engine optimisation strategy were discussed. Although positive feedback has been received on the portal up to now, Human Activities needs to attract more visitors and raise global awareness about the portal. The information displayed is not only a useful reference for e.g. researchers, academia, government administrations but also for the industry, associations, individual experts and anyone who has an interest in the fields covered by the portal. His Royal Highness Prince Joachim will open the fisheries and aquaculture fairs DanFish International and DanAqua, in Aalborg, Denmark on 7 October. As patron of DanFish International, HRH opened the event 3 times, lastly in 2011 where he received high praise for his opening speech which showed the Prince's great insight in fisheries.

Stand area close to sold out

Although DanFish International won't open until October, the fair is close to being sold out even though the exhibition space has been extended from previous years. The space will hold exhibitors from around 25 different countries and expects to attract about 15,000 visitors from around the world.

EUROFISH presents at seafood forum


A forum on innovative packaging for the seafood industry took place on 29 May 2015 in Gdansk, Poland. It was organised by Fish Industry Magazine and the company SealedAir. EUROFISH International Organisation was one of co-partners of the event and Aina Afanasjeva, Director of EUROFISH made an opening speech. She highlighted the role of packaging for food safety, product shelf life, operational efficiency and brand building. The forum brought together a wide-ranging group of experts and important stakeholders, mainly from Poland, to review the progress and future potential of use of different packaging solutions.
