Spain: Spanish guide to good practices in the marine aquaculture sector to be released
Tuesday, 10 April 2012 00:00

APROMAR, the Spanish Association of Marine Aquaculture Producers, is developing a Guide to Good Practices to reduce the environmental impact of aquaculture activities. Apromar initiated work on the guide in November 2011 and it is scheduled for completion in October 2012. The purpose of this book is to provide guidelines to the marine aquaculture sector to minimise the impact of their activities on the environment and to develop sustainable management techniques for farmed species.

The guide will describe the main environmental issues related to the marine aquaculture sector; it will detail environmental legislation affecting aquaculture activities and also suggest key actions to minimise impacts. The guide will revise sustainable management techniques for aquaculture farms and provide the tools to apply the techniques described. Finally the book will review the resources needed to implement the measures it advocates.

The project is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF) though the AcuiVerde project, the Empleaverde Programme of the Biodiversity Foundation, which aims at promoting sustainability in the marine aquaculture sector. The AcuiVerde project is also funding a distance learning course on the sustainable management of marine aquaculture products launched by APROMAR on 19 March 2012, which is aimed at workers in the marine aquaculture SMEs located in Andalusia, Murcia and Valencia. The objective of the course is to provide the participants the skills needed to make appropriate use of medicines and therapeutic products and to promote environmentally friendly anti-fouling products and procedures. The course will be taught over 40 hours and will be finalised on 20 April 2012. The course generated a lot of interest from the sector and APROMAR has received numerous requests for registration at the course, both from Spain and abroad.
